International translation workshops, where a poet of one language translates a poet of another language with the assistance of a translation intermediary or language advisor, are organised regularly, but there is no systematic research into the operation of such workshops. Newcastle University has therefore started a project to analyse the working procedures and results of the translation sessions during a translation workshop. This will look at what choices are made, what roles the participants have, what interactions take place, etc. With the title ‘The Poettrio Experiment’, Francis Jones, linguist and researcher at Newcastle University and translator into English from Dutch and Serbo-Croat, has brought together a group of poets and a number of post-doc researchers to translate each other’s work and record the processes during the Poetry International Festival. The first direct results of that process will be discussed and made public during a presentation on Friday 2 June. The participating poets are Fiona Sampson, Bill Herbert and Sean O’Brien from the United Kingdom and Elma van Haren, Hélène Gelèns and Menno Wigman from the Netherlands. The language advisors on duty are: Karlien van den Beukel, Rosemary Mitchell-Schuitevoerder and Willem Groenewegen. Presenter: Jan Baeke
