Ishion Hutchinson

(Jamaica, 1983)

Ishion Hutchinson was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica, and currently lives in the United States where he teaches at Cornell University. He published his debut Far District in 2010 and his second collection, House of Lords and Commons, awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award, followed in 2016. This second book mixes memories of growing up in Jamaica - the beauty of the landscape, the music, the people, the complex history - with political commitment and countless cultural references, including references to classical, literary texts. Although personal involvement can be found in all his poems, his lyric tone also has a certain detachment, thus making room for several layers of meaning.
