Zang Di

(China, 1964)

In China, Zang Di is considered a member of the 'Intellectual School', expanded by himself into 'Intellectual, Metaphysical and Sensual School'. By this he means to say that any form of limitation is alien to him, which can be seen in the way in which he brings plants, animals and objects to life in his poems, but also in the language he uses. The poet not only demonstrates a fine feeling for the physical, but also a use of syntax, titles and word combinations which is quite unorthodox by Chinese standards: an unorthodoxy reinforced by the numerous references, also in images and style, to writers from Western and in particular symbolist and surrealist traditions.
