Cees Nooteboom

(The Netherlands, 1933)

In his poetry, Cees Nooteboom proves to be an observer with an eye for detail, a spectator who visualises how reality explains itself but likewise regularly interrupts itself. The paradox is a favourite stylistic device, but any stylistic device, any poetic turn is welcome if that is the best way to arrive at a sense of meaning for the poem being written. In his poems, he questions the essence of time, the nature of the world in which we live and the inability of man to link fascination for life and reality to a clear understanding of these concepts. His international orientation not only resulted in references to the poetics of many foreign poets in his own work, but also made him one of the first writers to introduce the most important foreign poets to the Netherlands.
