Peter Gizzi

(USA, 1958)

Peter Gizzi’s poetry offers us a captivating insight into the complexity of our lives. References to today’s overfull and often overpowering reality race past at a giddy speed whilst the question of how we can define existence, or indeed whether it can be defined, is simultaneously posed. In that respect his work is reminiscent of Language-tradition poetry but Gizzi seems to be more driven by an interest in how the world and words are related to each other than by an interest in the mechanisms of language in itself. That same curiosity allows paradoxical constructions and unconventional conjunctions of concepts and situations to develop without any meaning or poetic frivolity being lost. Gizzi follows the American poetic tradition of letting the verse emanate from the adventure of writing and thinking. However, he effortlessly spans the entire Western poetic tradition, from classical to postmodern times. It is through that awareness that he is able to conflate the everyday world and thoughts about that world to create stimulating poetry.
